Temperature Conversion Formulas
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9, divide by 5, then add 32: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. For a quick mental estimate, double the Celsius value and add 30 — e.g. 20°C ≈ 70°F (exact: 68°F). A hot summer day of 30°C = 86°F; -10°C = 14°F.
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32, multiply by 5, then divide by 9: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. So 98.6°F (body temperature) = exactly 37°C. Room temperature of 68°F = 20°C.
What is Kelvin and when is it used?
Kelvin is the SI base unit of temperature used in science and engineering. It uses the same scale increments as Celsius, but starts at absolute zero (−273.15°C), the theoretical point at which all molecular motion stops. To convert: K = °C + 273.15. 0 K = −273.15°C = −459.67°F.
At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit the same?
−40°C = −40°F. This is the only point where both scales intersect. Above that, Fahrenheit values are higher; below it, Fahrenheit values are lower. This is a common trivia question and a useful sanity-check when cross-checking conversions.
